1 in 3 Americans feel dissatisfaction with their lives today. That is over 100 million people in the United States alone. What makes this number even sadder is that this data comes from several years ago, so those numbers may be even higher now that it’s 2017.
As a business owner, you have the unique ability to leave the 9-to-5 world and take your life, your business and your happiness into your own hands. Of course, nothing in life is that easy! You’ll face a lot of obstacles, have some difficult decisions to make, and will need to wear many hats.
You can balance all of this to become an owner of a successful business and live the life of your dreams. If you’ve been coming up with excuses for not taking your business to the next level, it’s time to have an honest talk with yourself.
Here are three questions you can ask yourself now to explore anything that’s been holding you back in your business:
“What do I really want?”
The sky’s the limit here! What do you envision for your life and your business this year? Do you crave better work-life balance so you can spend more time with your babies (or fur babies)? Do you long for location-independence so you can travel the world full-time? Do you want a six-figure (or even seven-figure) salary, so you can hopefully retire early? Start by getting really clear on what you desire in your life, and how running your own business could help you get there.
“How do I spend my time?”
This is a big one. As busy entrepreneurs, so many of us feel like there’s not enough time in the day - yet we’re also completely unaware of how we’re actually spending our time. To gain some insight and clarity, use a service like Toggl to track your time in 15 minute increments over the course of 1 work week. The results might shock you. Once you have the data in front of you, you’ll be able to see potential ways you’ve not been properly managing your time. This is crucial information to empower yourself to stop wasting time, and to change your behaviors in order to positively influence your productivity. In the words of Lori Streator: “Are you being busy, or are you being productive?”
“What’s holding me back?”
“Frankly, getting what you want is simple,” says author and motivational speaker, Mel Robbins, “Notice I didn’t say it was easy.” Robbins notes that we live in the Information Age. Unlike generations before us, we have limitless information readily available at our fingertips - literally. We can easily walk into a library and check out a book (for free) on any topic relating to our business. We can easily Google our business-related questions and instantly receive answers. We can watch Ted Talks and YouTube videos by business mentors whom we’ve never even met, or use Skype to digitally “meet” with professionals who are across the globe. The invention of the internet has allowed each of us the opportunity to become a global business owner. Now… what’s really holding you back?
Once you’ve gained clarity and are able to answer these three important questions, you can start implementing positive changes for the future of your business - and your life. Step out of complacency and into your passion. Being a business owner may not be easy - but it is worth it!
